It has been a cool month in LA, but I know that the Antelope Valley, except for having temperatures only in double digits, hasn't been spared much. But the people in the A.V. are a tough breed.
This week we'll see how the last major tournament, the PGA, goes. I suspect things will not be that different for Mr. Woods, but I hope he and Phil can get their games to together, especially since the Ryder Cup is not too far away.
As you know if you have read the July newsletter, we have our annual glowball tournament coming up in a couple of weeks. This is our major event for the year, and Shirley pulls out all the stops for it. She scours the A.V. asking local businesses to donate for the raffle. One year we had well over 100 raffle items for 40 people. Needless to say that the odds are good that each person would win a prize. And all of the money from the raffle goes to the Ronald McDonald house charity. So you are donating for a good cause and may get rewarded with a prize. Sounds like a win-win to me. One restriction is that you have to be entered into the glowball event to take part in the raffle. But the glowball event is great fun. Sounds like a win-win-win. However, if you win the glowball tournament (1st, 2nd and 3rd teams), you get another prize. You get the message. Sounds like a win-win-win-win. OK. I'll stop now. You can sign up online by Sunday and save $5 a person. Just click here and you are on your way.
News From the Clubhouse
Hi Everyone,
Once again the month of July swept by us so quickly and August is almost half way through. If you haven't signed up for our one-of-a-kind Glow ball tournament you might want to make that call or stop inside the pro shop and sign up you can even register on line. Sign up by 8/15 and you get $5.00 off the entry fee. We are taking all the names that sign up and on the night of the glow ball we will pick out one of the names from a hat or bowl and that lucky person will win a month of free golf. Do you feel lucky? Also if you would like to donate an item for our glow ball tournament we would greatly appreciate it and will put your name on our list of donors. We have a raffle during dinner and the the proceeds from this go to the Ronald McDonald House charity.
Good news! Rick and his staff outside have cut down the reeds on number 3 and will continue to cut down the rest. It is just a matter of finding the time to cut them when the course is not as busy so they won't be bombarded by balls.
We still have our Summer Sizzle Specials going on from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm Monday thru Saturday. Check out the specials inside the pro shop ask the starters which one is going on and what days they are. Play 18 pay for 9, Pay for 18 and get a free cart. These will only be going on until the end of August as the weather tends to cool down by then.
Are you registered on our Web site if not do so or tell a friend so you can play on your birthday or 7 days before or 7 days after check it out and see what you have to do to get this special birthday deal.
We have an abundance of used clubs in the pro shop and are selling them for $1.00 a club or 3 for $2.00. What a deal! Stop in and see what we have. Stop in after you play and have lunch or just take a break after 9 holes and then continue with the back 9 or sign up for another 9.
They say practice makes perfect but I am not sure about that. What happened to Tiger the last tournament he played in I don't think he has his game right now. Lets hope he soon does and gives Lefty a run.
Take care all and treat other players like you like to be treated.
Don't forget that Rancho Sierra is on twitter. Almost daily we have a secret word and if you mention that word in the clubhouse you receive something free. It can range from around of golf to food, drinks, range balls or golf items. If interested, also you have to do is check out www.twitter.com/ranchosierragc.

President’s Cup
The President’s Cup - our single elimination match play tournament- started on August 1. 23 golfers have now dwindled down to 12 with more eliminations each Sunday until we have one last competitor. The final match will be played in the beginning of September. Good luck to all those who are still eligible.
Summer Classic Held August 8th
What a beautiful day for the Summer Classic! Warm but not hot, and little to no wind. 10 teams, playing a best-ball format, competed for top honors. The competition was very intense. In last year’s Summer Classic, the winners won with a score of 17 under par. In this year’s Summer Classic, 17 under wasn’t even good enough to place! Congratulations to the following:
1st place - Herman Rodriguez and Chris Gonzales -22
2nd place - Joey Chewning and Bobby Griffin -19
3rd place - Tony Abrams and Bob Gonzales -18
Crying Towel Sweepstakes - Sal Herrera and Alan Hegwood
Low individual Net
Lows - 1st place - Herman Rodriguez 56
2nd place- Sal Herrera 60
Highs - 1st place - Bob Gonzales 55
2nd place - Tracy Yates 60
Ralph Cotell 60
Our next Classic will be held in November. Hope to see you there!
And last but not least…….
I read an interesting item in this month’s GOLF magazine and wanted to share it with everyone here:
ASK THE RULES GUY by Steve Beslow
Dear Rules Guy:
I hit my second shot barely out of bounds. My ball was close to the OB marker so, in the interest of time, I didn’t bother with a drop, instead just hitting hit and mentally making a note to take a penalty stroke. Later, my friend asked if I took a drop. When I explained what I had done, he told me that I had earned two penalty strokes, not one. Was he right?
ANSWER: The good news is, your buddy is wrong. The bad news? He was too lenient. By playing your ball from outside the boundaries of the course, you were hitting a ball that was no longer in play. According to Decision 15/6, you played a “wrong ball”, a two-stroke penalty. However, you still need to be penalized for hitting your ball OB. So tack on an extra stroke (making three in total) and play your ball from where you took your second shot. OUCH!
If you have any questions or comments, please email the Rancho Sierra Mens Club atRSmensgolf@aol.com
