What is FootGolf?

Combining the popular sports of soccer with golf, FootGolf was developed in the Netherlands and is now being played in over 16 countries around the world. The goal of FootGolf is to kick a soccer ball into the FootGolf hole in the fewest number of 'strokes' (or kicks) possible. Like golf, FootGolf uses a tee box and a green, and is played on a golf course, and thus has the standard golf hazards such as lakes, bunkers, and trees to combat. Unlike golf, FootGolf uses 21" cups in diameter, shorter holes, and a soccer ball rather than a plethora of golf clubs to carry. Because of this simplicity, FootGolf rounds take less time to complete. There's also a shorter learning curve as well with FootGolf.

What Do I Wear to Play FootGolf?

While a golf cap, collared shirt, and argyle socks are typical FootGolf attire, a collared shirt / standard sports attire is acceptable at Rancho Sierra. No tank tops allowed.

Indoor soccer shoes are recommended. Soccer cleats are NOT allowed at Rancho Sierra Golf Course.

How Do I Play FootGolf?

You will need to rent, buy, or bring a soccer ball to Rancho Sierra Golf Course to play FootGolf. Each player needs his/her own soccer ball. We have rentals and soccer balls for sale if you do not have your own. Make sure your ball is different in appearance from your fellow players.

When you check in at the clubhouse, you will receive a FootGolf scorecard. Take a look at the map so you can identify the location of the holes. The FootGolf tee markers are orange, and the flags are also orange with the hole numbers listed.

If you are familiar with both soccer and golf, FootGolf will be an easy transition. But if you are a soccer player new to golf, or a golfer new to soccer, there are some things you need to know:

FootGolf for Golfers

If you have played golf before, FootGolf is simply golf with a soccer ball. To strike the soccer ball off the tee, kick with the shoelaces or 'toe poke'. Around the greens, use your instep. While putting, it is recommended you use your instep or 'toe poke' for increased control.

FootGolf for Soccer Players

If you have never played golf before, but are comfortable with soccer, the transition to FootGolf consists primarily of learning golf rules, including Pace of Play and proper golf etiquette.

Pace of Play is a common phrase in golf – it simply refers to playing at a steady pace to minimize wait times.

While the FootGolf course and the golf course are separate, they do share the same areas. There will be places on the course where the FootGolfers and golfers intersect. To minimize mishaps, the golfer has right of way. When in doubt, let safety, common sense, and general courtesy be the deciding factor.

Basic Rules

  1. Golfers have the right of way on the golf course. This maximizes the safety of FootGolfers from mishit golf balls.
  2. To tee off, you may kick the ball from a position up to two yards behind the tee markers at the designated teeing area (between the orange tee markers). Ensure your kick will not interfere with other players or golfers.
  3. The ball must be played in a single movement. Your foot should be set separate from the ball, clearly behind, before the kick. Touching the ball with the bottom of your foot is not allowed at anytime.
  4. Wait to play until the ball has completely come to rest. It is not legal to stop the ball from rolling with the wind.
  5. Play the ball from where it lies: It's not allowed to move the ball or remove permanent objects. (You are not allowed to break branches or pull plants)
    Exception: You may mark the spot and lift the ball when it may obstruct the other players' kick or ball in any way.
  6. Do not kick a ball from the golf greens. If your ball comes to rest on a golf green, move it to the nearest spot off the green for your next kick. No penalty.
  7. Water hazard: If the ball lands in a water hazard, retrieve or replace it within 2 steps from the closest land point from where the ball entered the water. Receive one-stroke penalty. Or you can place the ball at the position of the previous kick and receive a one-stroke penalty.
  8. Out of bounds: Out of bounds is defined by white stakes. If your ball goes out of bounds, place the ball within 2 steps from where the ball crossed between the white stakes. Receive a one-stroke penalty.
  9. Only between the Holes may the ball be picked up and cleaned.
