Rancho Sierra Golf Course
January 2008 Newsletter
Hi Everyone,
Wow, what a wet January this is turning out to be. In the golf course business, wet weather is good for the course but bad for the wallet. Oh well, we try to make the best of it and look forward to the spring.
I spent most of last week at the golf course helping the inside and outside staff. I even had the chance to play 18 holes with the Men’s Club. Even though it was a little chilly and a little wet, it was a lot of fun. With views of the snowy mountains in the distance and the threat of more rain, thirteen brave souls were out trying to win a greeny (closest to the pin), get low score, or just get some exercise. Although I hit my share of balls into the desert, I actually won one of the greenies. What a great sense of accomplishment. Watch out Tiger!
Golf In January
Just because it’s a little cold and a little wet, that doesn’t mean that you can’t play golf (no rain, no gain). Unless the weather is really rainy, the course will be open. In the morning, we may have a frost delay, but you’ll still be able to get your round in. When in doubt, call the course at 661-946-1080. We’ll be glad to answer any questions you have. We’re also always looking for suggestions on how to make the course better and your golf experience more fun. Let us know what you think.
New Golf Stuff
We just received a large shipment of super hot putters, wedges, golf bags and other stuff. Come in and check them out. They are on sale now at great prices. Spring is just around the corner, and you need to be ready.
Valentine's Day Special
Starting Monday, January 28, we are having a promotion for a beautiful ladies golf set. This would make a great Valentine’s Day gift for that special valentine. The set consists of
- A 380cc Titanium driver
- 4 additional woods, 3,5,7, and 9
- Cavity back irons
- Generation style putter
- Beatufiul, deluxe cart bag with nine pockets
- 18 holes of golf with cart rental at Rancho Sierra Golf Course with cart for two.
The price on Monday, January 28 is $249. This is already a great price, and it even includes 18 holes of golf for two plus cart. However, what makes it even more interesting is the way the price changes. At the beginning of each day, the price will be reduced by $1.00, until the set is sold, even if it goes to as low as $1.00. Rancho Sierra Golf Course employees and their families are not eligible for this promotion, so it is only available to our customers. Come in and check out this beautiful golf set.
This promotion is only for a single golf set. How long can you wait? You can call the course at 661-946-1080 to see if it is still available.
Rancho Sierra e-Giveaway
For all of you that are subscribed on our web site and receive these newsletters, we’re going to have a drawing just for you in March. As a way to say thank you (“Thank you’s” are nice but freebies are nicer), we’re going to draw one or more names from our email subscriber list. Each person drawn will win a free month of golf at Rancho Sierra. The winners will be contacted by email. Good Luck!!!
Superintendent's Corner
Steve and his crew are not standing around idle in the wet weather. Current course improvement and maintenance projects include:

- Planting new trees. We have new trees down the left side of #1 fairway.
- Moving and repairing irrigation lines.
- Mechanical work.
Another project that the crew worked on was to move some boulders in front of the green for hole #4. We have just started this and we’ll be putting in more boulders as we get them. If you want to help and you happen have some extra large rocks that you want to get rid of, let us know. For the months of January and February, bring in one or more boulders (50 lbs or more – no pebbles, please!) and we’ll give you a free nine holes of golf.
Rules Corner
There are so many rules in golf that Steve Whitson, our superintendent, golf pro and resident golf expert, and I thought it would be nice to have an interesting and less than obvious rule in every newsletter. So here is the rule for January:
Q. A player whose ball is lodged high in a tree [Tim’s Note: this happens to me a lot.] wishes to dislodge it by shaking the tree or throwing a club so that he can identify it and proceed under the unplayable ball Rule. Is this permissible?
And the answer is ….
A. Yes. The player should state his intention before taking such action to avoid any question being raised as to whether a penalty would be incurred under Rule 18-2.
Thanks to everyone. I hope the rain ends soon and we get some nice weather. Let us know if you have ideas for the newsletters. I’m perfectly willing to share space, so you can even write a column if you’re interested.
Sincerely,
