Hi Everyone,
We're almost done with January. Before you know it, it will be springtime. While the Winter weather is not that bad (except when the wind blows), I much prefer Spring, Fall, and even Summer.
The PGA season has started, sans Tiger Woods, and it will be interesting to see what happens there. It seems like the other pros are using his absence as an opportunity to score some points and make some money. I guess timing is everything.
Anyway, if you haven't been out to Rancho Sierra in awhile, come out and say hi to Shirley, Tracy, Rick, Pedro and the rest of the staff. And drop me a message at taiken@ranchosierragolf.com with any suggestions, comments, and yes, even complaints. And hang in there; I see Spring in the distance and she looks beautiful.
News From the Clubhouse
With all the rain, it's been pretty quiet in the clubhouse of late. So let me update you on our Polar Golfer contest.
Three days remain in the polar golf contest, and while we have clear leaders in both divisions, it’s not over yet!
Gerard Webb (29 rounds) has an insurmountable lead over Micki Dyke (15) and Sal Herrera (14) in our monthly contest, while someone could possibly outseat James Tona (11) in our non-monthly contest. Jarek Feit, Lou Morse, and Mike Verdaasdonk (4) are all tied for second place, but with a lot of golf, and a bit of luck, it could happen!

Congratulations to Richard Smith and Jim Jucksch who won the 2009 Golfer of the Year Tournament. Richard shot a net 57 in the low bracket and Jim shot a net 55 in the high bracket to each defeat 10 other golfers for Golfer of the Year honors. Congratulations also to all of our Golfers of the Month for 2009: Tony Abrams, John Yates, Tim Garcher, Joey Chewning, Bud Bryant, Jack Harvey, Tracy May, Jacques Arnold, Paul Bergerner in the low bracket and Ray Fontaine, Bob Gonzales, Dave Smith, Dominic Falco, Ralph Cotell, Jason Mentry, Mike Villa, Lou Arnold, Alan Hegwood, Jim Mungarro, Kenny Green and Tracy Yates in the high bracket.
Golfer of the Month, Sweepers, and Partners Best Ball
Perhaps you’ve seen the big bulletin board in the clubhouse and wondered what do all those names and numbers mean? What’s a Sweeper? What’s a Partners’ Best Ball? How can I be the Golfer of the Month?
Each of the them; Sweeper, Partners Best Ball, and Golfer of the Month (GOM), are additional side pots that are played during Mens Club events on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Entry fee is only $1 for each event, $1 apiece for Partners Best Ball and you must enter before your round begins.
Golfer of the Month, or GOM for short, is a monthly contest. To enter, give your $1 entry fee to the starter and tell them it’s for GOM. At the end of your round, subtract your handicap from your total. Example: Joe, a 22 handicap, shoots a total of 86 and subtracts his 22 handicap strokes and completes the GOM card for a net of 64. Lowest net score of the month wins and becomes eligible for the Golfer of the Year tournament at the end of the year. GOM is divided into two divisions, high (Handicaps of 19 and above) and low (18 and under).
Sweeper is a weekly nine-hole, low net contest. It is broken up into two divisions: Lows - those golfers with a course handicap of 18 or less and Highs - those with a handicap of 19 or higher. At the end of your round, choose either your front nine or back nine and subtract your handicap. Example: Joe, a 22 handicap, shoots 44 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine. Joe completes the sweeper card for the back nine, subtracting 11 handicap strokes from his 42 for a net score of 31. It’s that simple.
Lowest score of the week wins! Winnings are placed “on the books” for use in the clubhouse.
Partner’s Best Ball, (PBB) - two golfers take the best net score for each hole and complete the PBB card. Joe and Bill (18 handicap) enter the PBB. On hole #1, Joe gets a 6 and Bill gets a 4. Since they both get a stroke on hole #1, their net score is 3. On hole #2, both Joe and Bill get a 5. Bill gets a stroke but Joe gets two strokes on hole #2 so their net score is a 3...a net eagle! They complete the round and enter their net hole scores. Lowest score of the week wins. Winnings are placed “on the books”.
See the starter before you play your Men to enter GOM, Sweepers or PBB. Put completed cards in the appropriate slot in the box on the table near the back door. Make sure your card is dated, signed and attested or your score may be disqualified. You also earn points that go to help you qualify for the mid-year and end of the year Points Tournaments.
