Hi Everyone,

I guess we have the full brunt of the heat now. The British Open has come and gone and we're almost to August. For us out at Rancho Sierra, that means beautiful mornings and Glowball. Our annual glowball tournament will be held in August this year.  It's a late afternoon and evening of golf, food, and fun. We play nine holes in the late afternoon followed by dinner in the clubhouse and picnic pavilion. While the golfers are eating, we light up the course with glowsticks. Then after dark, play another nine holes with glowballs. Players are also given glow necklaces and glowsticks, and are encouraged to bring flashlights. Trying to hit a lighted ball when everything around you is dark is quite challenging, and the scores always reflect it.

If you've never tried it, you should.  It's quite an experience. If you have tried it, chances are you're hooked. For more information about our glowball tournament, check our web site - www.ranchosierragolf.com - or ask for a sign-up form in the clubhouse.  Don't wait though - we're offering a special rate of $40/player if you sign up by 8/15 either online or in the clubhouse.  That's $5 off the regular price, but only if you sign up early.

News From the Clubhouse

Hi Everyone,

Is it hot enough for you? We couldn't wait for the weather to warm up and it certainly has, it has climbed all the way up to 104. Where is the wind when you want it, okay maybe just a breeze. Out here when the ducks are walking, you know it is too windy to be playing golf.

We have towels inside that we put in ice cold water and give them to our customer to place around their neck or forehead. It really does cool the body temperature down. Please feel free to ask for one from the starters. Also make sure you drink lots of water and do not become dehydrated.

We hope everyone had a safe and fun 4th of July. I know a few of you spent it out here at the course playing, I hope your game was on and you had a great time. Rick and I are looking into putting up water misters along the top of the pavilion. That way while you are waiting to tee off or you are coming around to play the back 9, you can stop and cool off and then continue your game.

The Antelope Valley Sheriff's Boosters are having there annual Glowball tournament on Friday July 16th at our course. It is for a good cause and a blast to watch. Speaking of Glowball tournaments, as mentioned above, we will be having our 6 annual tournament on August the 28th which is a Saturday night. It fills up fast so make sure you either sign up inside the pro shop or on line. We have flyers with all the information at the front desk. If you have never played in a glowball tournament it is a fun outing for the whole family, you play the front 9 in day light then go inside for dinner and a raffle and as the sun sets, our staff sets up the course with all the "glowing" items. The hazards, tee boxes, lakes, and flag poles are lit up. It's like watching shooting stars, everyone can be heard laughing and having a blast. Hope to see you there.

If you know of anyone who isn't registered on our web site, please mention to them that if they do, when it comes time for there birthday they can print out a voucher from the web site and bring it in for a free round of golf. It is good starting seven days before until 7 days after their birthday (single use). We don't give or sell your email address and by signing up you receive first hand any and all events, sales, specials or email blast concerning the course.

We also have a twitter account and almost daily we have a secret word and if you mention that word you receive something free any where from around of golf to food, drinks, range balls or golf items. Follow us on twitter we tweet do you? If interested, check out www.twitter.com/ranchosierragc.

Starting July 19th we have been having golf specials such as on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 11:30 and 3:30 you get a free cart rental with a paid green fee (18) holes. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between 11:30 and 3:30 play 18 holes of golf for the price of 9, cart not included. These exclude all other promotion's and holidays.

Anyone having a birthday or wedding anniversary? A golf outing makes for a perfect place to come and enjoy being with your friends or loved ones. We can accommodate a group of up to 40 people for a tournament or just a get together playing golf. Please talk to myself or any one of the starters and we can set up a day, time, cost and anything else you would need to know to make for a great day.

"If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf."

Practice on, hope to see everyone at the course.

Shirley

Men's Club News

As the weather heats up, so do the activities in the Mens Club. We’ve got three great events planned for August and beyond. On August 1, we’ll start the first round of the annual President’s Cup. This is a single-elimination, handicap, head-to-head, match play tournament over consecutive weeks to determine a single winner. Entry fee is only $10.

We’ll take a break from the Presidents Cup on August 8 for the Summer Classic. This is our quarterly, partners best ball, hi-low split major tournament. Entry fee is $50 and includes lunch. Sidepots and Parimutuals will also be available. Entries must be received by 5 pm on August 6. The Draw for Partners will be held immediately after the deadline in the clubhouse on August 6. We’ll also play a scramble on August 14.

Entries for both tournaments can be submitted in person to Bob Gonzales OR you can place your entry fee in an envelope and place it in the box above the computer. Remember to write your name on the front of the envelope, (legibly please,) and for which event your entering.

And our last event is another Away Trip. This time, we’re going to Mesquite, NV! Exact dates, times, and prices are still being researched at press time so that we can get the best deal possible.

If you have any questions, see one of the officers or email us at Rsmensgolf@aol.com.

On a personal note, I want to give a big “THANK YOU!” to the members and officers of the Rancho Sierra Mens Club who participated in the Sons of American Legion Charity Golf Tournament on July 10. Proceeds went to the AV Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society. When I made the original announcement in June, our members stepped up and collected enough funds to sponsor a hole. Many of the officers and members also participated in the tournament. Thanks, Guys! Jenny would be very proud of you. I already am.

Just a Par 3

By Bob Gonzales

Lastly, do you think our par-3’s are a little tough? Look at this one!

Forget pitch and putt - this tee-off point on top of a 1,410 ft. mountain in South Africa
is the hardest golf shot in the world, and more than $1 million awaits the player who can score a hole in one.

Players must take a helicopter to the top to play the longest and highest par three on the planet.

Taking the shot also requires courage. A player needs to teeter terrifyingly close to the edge of the mammoth hillside.

The Extreme 19th cost is $1060 per foursome, which includes the helicopter ride, souvenir cap, glove, and a DVD of you playing the hole. So far, no one has even come close pocketing the million-dollar prize.

To read more about this, see http://www.southafrica.info/news/sport/golf-extreme-150110.htm.
